Sunday 17th March 2019, 6.30pm
St John’s Church, St John’s Road, Harpenden, AL5 1DJ
Following on from our liturgical performances of Monteverdi 1610 Vespers and Handel Dixit Dominus, Amici Voices are delighted to return to St John’s Southdown to further explore Buxtehude Membra Jesu Nostri. Performing in their distinctive one-voice-per-part style, Amici Voices once again join forces with St James’ Baroque in an evening of Lenten contemplation.
A cycle of seven short cantatas, Membra Jesu Nostri is a vivid meditation on Christ’s Passion. Buxtehude calls to mind the human reality of Jesus’ death on the cross, addressing his suffering body: to the feet, the knees, the hands, the sides, the breast, the heart and the face.
Amici Voices is one of the most exciting young vocal ensembles in the UK today. Founded in Harpenden in 2012, they have given over 20 performances in the UK and Europe, most recently making their debut at St John’s Smith Square in London. Their first CD received 4* in the Telegraph, and their second will be released by Hyperion Records on March 1st 2019 and will be available to purchase at this concert.
